Résumé :

The Large Copper has been bred by both authors over several generations to find out whether Lycaena dispar rutilus (WER - NEBURG, 1864) (from France: Metz) and Lycaena dispar batavus (OBER - THUR, 1923) (originally from the Frisian part of The Netherlands, but reared over many years in England) belong to two distinct subspecies. The two subspecies show very similar development and behaviour under different rearing conditions; the imagines exhibit only very minor behavioural differences. Two or three generations per year can be achieved for both subspecies in the lab without problems. Morphological differences in preimaginal instars of the two subspecies were not observed. The fertility of the hybrids is obviously not significantly reduced over 3 hybrid generations. Therefore, rutilus and batavus are just two subspecies, due to imaginal differences in external morphology: pattern, average size, and colouration SN 0343-7620 UT ZOOREC:ZOOR14405028214
